The Audi S1 and the Audi S1 Sportback

A great name makes a comeback: Audi is presenting the S1 and the S1 Sportback, the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line. Their 2.0 TFSI develops 170 kW (231 hp) and produces 370 Nm (272.90 lb-ft) of torque; the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the extensively revamped suspension put the power effortlessly down onto the road. The Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback set the benchmark in their class for dynamic performance.

Back in the 1980s an Audi S1 garnered a legendary reputation – it was the car that would see the brand dominate the World Rally Championship in its day. Now the abbreviation is coming back – but this time as a road-going version: the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback constitute the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line, adding an entry-level version to the Audi S model portfolio.

2015 S-Class Coupé

Stylistically self-assured presence, exclusive appointments and refined sportiness – the new S-Class Coupé from Mercedes-Benz combines the classic proportions of a large, sporty coupé with modern luxury and state-of-the art technology. As a world première, the breathtaking two-door coupé can be optionally equipped with the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system with curve tilting function. Additional technical highlights are the head-up display and the touch pad feature. Optionally available expressive headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals, produce a uniquely striking appearance.

”As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. ”The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupé marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupé virtually unaltered. The large coupé has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the ”S-Class” again.”
”The world premiere of the active curve tilting function demonstrates the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive,” notes Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG with responsibility for corporate research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development. ”The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’s occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers.” The new S-Class Coupé will have its world première at the Geneva International Motor Show (6 – 16 March 2014); distribution to dealerships is scheduled for the second half of 2014. The two-door car is available with a 4663 cc V8 biturbo engine. The S 500 Coupé has a nominal output of 335 kW (455 hp), its torque level peaks at 700 Nm. The sporty motoring experience is significantly enhanced by the emotional sound produced by the exhaust system.

MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first ”suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The Coupé leans into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort.
Like the S-Class Saloon, the new Coupé is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer. The ”Intelligent Drive” systems include, among other things the PRE-SAFE® brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with junction assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features an additional function apart from the adaptive brake assistant, which provides collision protection from a speed of 7 km/h: if there remains a danger of collision and the driver fails to respond, the system can carry out an autonomous braking manoeuvre at speeds of up to 105 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.
As in the saloon, the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been expanded through the inclusion of PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the parking brake on the vehicle stationary and thus minimise the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.
Numerous optional equipment features are available to make the interior of the S-Class Coupé exceptionally luxurious and comfortable. For example, the AIR‑BALANCE package including the components ”fragrancing” and ”ionisation” is available, as is the electric armrest heating as a component of the Warmth Comfort package. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional Seat Comfort package, the front seats feature the ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.
In cooperation with high-end audio specialists Burmester, two especially high-value audio systems have been developed: the Burmester® surround sound system and the Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system.

2015 BMW X3 facelift

201401_P90142828-zoom-orig

Highlights. It was back in 2003 that BMW founded the new mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment with the launch of the X3. That means the BMW X3 has been a paragon of sporty dynamics, premium ambience and robust agility, coupled with low fuel consumption and emissions, for over 10 years now – racking up sales figures of more than one million units in the process. The second generation of the successful BMW X3 has made a compelling case for itself since its introduction in 2010, boasting the best interior and boot measurements and the greatest versatility in its class.

And now the new BMW X3 (fuel consumption combined: 8.3–4.7* l/100 km [34.0–60.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 193–124* g/km) is set to build inexorably on its segment leadership. A pair of new-generation diesel engines, producing more power but once again burning less fuel, serve to improve dynamic performance and reduce pollutant emissions. The exterior and interior design of the new BMW X3 reveal stylistic revisions and also add further depth to the car’s practicality with detail solutions responding to customer requirements.

Autohullut.fi test: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 L W222 review

Mercedes_S500L_W222_1.JPG

What is the number one luxury car? The most common answer would probably be the S-Class Mercedes, the kind of ride used by heads of state, sheiks and dictators all over the world. The Mercedes S-Class is clearly the flagship in it’s class and a milestone when compared with other brands of luxury cars (such as the BMW 7 Series , Audi A8).

We had a possibility to test drive the delivery of the new W222 -series Mercedes- Benz S500 L, and we gladly grabbed the opportunity. The S500 is a 450 horsepower luxury business missile, which has adequate power for any situation. We compared the new S-Class to the previous generation W221 S500 series model (model year 2008), which had a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 good for 388 horsepower. The older model was equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, while our brand new test car was rear wheel driven.

Engine and Drivability

Our test car was rear wheel drive and in the Finnish winter this is not a good thing. Despite having 450 hp and promising a 0-100 km/h of 4.8 s, we only managed to get a time of 6.2 seconds, which was frustrating and disappointing at the same time. The wet road surface combined with studded tires, rear wheel drive and a massive 700 Nm of torque caused the traction control system to work overtime. Only occasionally on dry spots we got a glimpse of the car’s performance potential. Unfortunately the rear-wheel drive is not suitable for the Finnish winter and therefore we highly recommend 4MATIC all-wheel drive for all high performance models. Although this model had a large V8 under the hood, only a subdued murmur entered the cabin.

The car is intended for peaceful cruising, especially on long trips, so the steering is quite light and forgiving and it can’t be described as very sporty or accurate. Compared to the previous generation W221 with the AMG-pack, the control was more numb. The suspension is soft and luxurious, it filters out the poor Finnish roads efficiently and the ride comfort is better than before, even without the new Magic Body Control air suspension, which was not available for test drive.

The 7-speed transmission worked smoothly, but it is no longer the most modern and economical type on the market and the new 8- speed automatic and 7-speed dual clutch transmissions are better. Mercedes has, however, recently introduced a new 9-speed gearbox 9G, which is updated for the S-Series during 2014, probably from model year 2015 onwards. That will be a gamechanger.

Safety Equipment and Features
Mercedes_S500L_W222_6.JPG

The S-series is best known for it’s technical innovations and unmatched luxury. It has been for decades the technical showcase model in which all the advances in technology are presented first, after which the equipment will gradually become available to more common and affordable cars. Examples of innovations found first in the S-Series are numerous. Among them ESP stability control, ABS brakes, night vision assistant, adaptive cruise control etc. In the latest W222 model all indoor and outdoor lights are LED lights and there is a glamorous lounge -like lighting and atmosphere inside. Interior light color can be adjusted to one’s mood. The one thing we were disappointed in, was that in the times of 3D bluray the entertainment system was still DVD-based.

New technological innovations include Magic Body Control air suspension and seat belts airbags . Technological advantages of the Magic Body Control -chassis are presented in the video below:

Magic Body Control is able to predict uneven road surfaces through the stereo camera due to bumps in the road and adjust the suspension accordingly. Rear seat belt airbags, in turn, will increase the surface area of the seat belt, minimizing the load on the chest of passengers in a collision.

Mercedes_S500L_W222_11.JPG

The new S-series also features air ionization ( Air Balance), which lets you create a pleasant fragrance environment from four different scent options. Also the Burmester audio system is a new option, and the 1.450 euro (tax-free) extra price is justified for those who enjoy high-quality sound.

All in all, even a standard S-Class is luxurious and full of tech toys, but only by ticking optional extras, the car becomes the milestone, based on which the S-Class has received its reputation. The car we test drove had over 46,000 euros (tax-free) of accessories, so the technology doesn’t come cheap. Our personal favorites include the Night View Assist, keyless go, dynamic handling control seats, as well as thermal comfort package. Thermal comfort package heats also the armrest and door side panels in addition to front seats, which will bring added comfort in our cold climate conditions.

Interior and Comfort

Mercedes_S500L_W222_10.JPG
Mercedes_S500L_W222_7.JPG

Comfort is the main advantage of the S-Class. There is nothing that comes even close to the S-Class level. Our test car was the extended Lang model with ample rear space. The tested car featured also the rear seat comfort package, which allows the rear seats to be electrically adjusted and fitted with massage, heating, ventilation functions etc. The interior as a whole is first-class and modern. The suspension is more comfortable than ever, the difference between the previous generation is clear.

Summary

It is hard to find anything to criticize in the new S-class. A slightly disconnected steering feel could be mentioned, but then again, it belongs to the nature of the car, since this is no track car in spite of the 450 -horsepower output. The steering wheel design is not our favorite and the new COMAND could be be more intuitive, but these are a matter of taste. What is clear is that the new S-Class is a new milestone to which other brands of luxury models will again be compared.

As tested the S500 model was nearly 250,000 euros, of which the car tax accounts for an unbelievable EUR 90,000 almost doubling the price of the car. This is not, however, the car’s fault. Finland’s unreasonable and absurd car tax is to be blamed.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG

Mercedes-AMG rigorously continues its product initiative: with the new GLA 45 AMG the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz makes a dynamic statement in the strongly growing segment of the compact SUV. The combination of powerful-distinctive design, exclusive appointments as well as superior engine power and driving performance is unique: the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine in the world puts 265 kW (360 hp) of power and 450 Newton metres of torque on the road. The new GLA 45 AMG high-performance SUV also shines with regard to emissions and fuel consumption figures.
With a fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined; CO2: 175 g/km) and compliance with EU 6 emissions standards the GLA 45 AMG once more provides proof that at Mercedes-AMG maximum performance does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. The GLA 45 AMG also holds the pole position with regard to driving dynamics: it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the GLA 45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept.
Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: ”The response to the Concept GLA 45 AMG during the world première at the Los Angeles International Auto Show has reaffirmed our decision to launch this new AMG model. Currently there is no segment growing faster than that of compact SUVs. For Mercedes-AMG it is therefore a logical step to make a dynamic statement in this segment with the GLA 45 AMG. Our new high-performance-SUV not only offers the world’s most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine, but also impressively low fuel consumption and emissions figures. Not least on account of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the GLA 45 AMG is a true AMG when it comes to driving dynamics”.
Young target group: styling, dynamics and independence
In addition to the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG, the GLA 45 AMG is the third vehicle with four-cylinder turbo engine to appeal to a young target group. The trend-oriented customers set great store in styling, dynamics and independence – traits that are perfectly embodied in the new high-performance SUV from Affalterbach. Meeting a wide variety of customer desires has always been one of the strengths of Mercedes-AMG. The GLA 45 AMG now expands the extensive SUV line-up to five models (GLA 45 AMG, ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG). Mercedes-AMG thus offers the widest range of SUVs among all high-performance premium brands.
Hallmark AMG features: the world’s most powerful series-produced four-cylinder engine
Best in class: the engine of the GLA 45 AMG fully lives up to this claim, as a look at the figures shows. The AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the most powerful series-production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world. It produces 265 kW (360 hp) of power and develops a peak torque of 450 Newton metres. A power density of 133 kW (181 hp) puts the AMG high-performance turbo engine on a par with the world’s most powerful super sports cars.
