Autohullut.fi test: 2014 BMW X5 30d F15 review

BMW_X5_30d_1.JPG

Summary:

+ Excellent driving feel despite being a big SUV
+ Extremely versatile range of accessories
+ The most modern 7-seater
+ Powerful and economical engines and excellent gearbox
– No Euro NCAP crash results yet, the previous model was not crash tested at all
– No rear side airbags
– Complex service program

It has been quiet in the field of large SUV’s. WV Touareg and Porsche Cayenne are a few years old, and the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7 arrive next year at the earliest. Therefore, the arrival of the new X5 is refreshing. For those seeking a 7-seater have only one option unless they desire a 10 -year-old Q7 or XC90.

Externally, the car has changed only moderately, but the end result is excellent. Weight is almost unchanged from the E70 body style in the 30d-model (2145kg vs 2150kg), but the overall length has increased by 3 cm. The newly styled headlights extend all the way to the kidney grille giving the car a more sporty look compared to the predecessor and it is obvious that styling overall has been a higher priority in the new X5. The M-Sport package adds further sportiness to the appearance and for sporty car fans it is a must. In addition to the appearance the M-sport package includes standard equipment such as the M-chassis, alcantara electric sports seats, a sports steering wheel, parking sensors and a flappy paddle gearbox.

Concept GLA 45 AMG

At the Los Angeles International Auto Show (20 November to 1 December 2013), Mercedes-AMG will be presenting its outlook on a compact, high-performance SUV. The Concept GLA 45 AMG features an excitingly bold, distinctive design and is powered by the most muscular four-cylinder engine in series production anywhere in the world: its AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with an output of 265 kW (360 hp) and maximum torque of 450 newton metres offers unrivalled performance in conjunction with low fuel consumption.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: ”With the Concept GLA 45 AMG, we are setting a stake firmly in the ground of the strongly growing market segment of compact SUVs. Our customers – a young target group who set great store by styling, dynamism and independence – can now start looking forward to a dynamic high-performance car. The most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system add up to make the Concept GLA 45 AMG a unique proposition.”

A seven in front of the comma in terms of fuel consumption per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) and compliance with the EU 6 emissions standard go to show that superb performance at Mercedes-AMG does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in under five seconds demonstrates the dynamism that is so typical of the brand. Thanks to a combination of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the drive configuration of the Concept GLA 45 AMG impresses with its sporty yet also efficient performance.

Powerful and muscular: breathtaking design
Stunning engineering is combined with some breathtaking styling features by Mercedes-AMG: the Concept GLA 45 AMG has a powerful and muscular presence on the road. This is due in considerable part to the AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with 255/35 R 21 tyres. Painted matt black with a red rim flange, they certainly attract attention. They are complemented by the AMG wheel hub covers with centre lock-look, plus an AMG high-performance braking system with red brake callipers.

The large front splitter in high-gloss black on the AMG front apron, the black flics (air deflectors) with additional flics, together with the large cooling air intakes, serve to underline the long tradition of motorsport at Mercedes-AMG. The motor racing look is further reinforced by the start number ”45” on the doors and the distinctive AMG logo at the upper edge of the windscreen. Further design elements exclusive to AMG include the ”twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome, the side sill panels with high-gloss black inserts, the ”TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings, the high-gloss black roof rails and the large rear aerofoil.

Sporty wraps and red highlights
The sporty silver grey/red foil wrap on the bonnet, vehicle sides, C-pillar and rear end makes a memorable impression and is complemented by the red highlights on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors, diffuser insert and AMG rear aerofoil. The rear view is dominated by the diffuser insert with black trim element and by the twin-tailpipe design of the two rectangular, high-gloss black tailpipe trims of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

201310_P90138094-zoom-orig(1)

The ultra-sporty driving characteristics of the BMW 2 Series Coupe are expressed in the design of the exterior. The 135 kW/184 hp four-cylinder engine in the BMW 220i Coupe is making its debut in a compact BMW model, and the 240 kW/326 hp six-cylinder in-line engine under the bonnet of the BMW M235i Coupe earns it top billing as the most powerful petrol-driven member of the BMW M Performance Automobile line-up.

The specific proportions of the BMW 2 Series Coupe are contained within a body measuring 4,432 millimetres in length. The two-door model is therefore 108 millimetres longer than the BMW 1 Series and 72 millimetres longer than the outgoing BMW 1 Series Coupe. The new compact Coupe is also 26 millimetres wider than its predecessor (at 1,774 millimetres), and has a 30-millimetre longer wheelbase (2,690 millimetres) and wider tracks (front: 1,521 millimetres, +41 millimetres; rear: 1,556 millimetres, +43 millimetres). At the same time the vehicle height has been lowered by 5 millimetres to 1,418 millimetres. The result is an increase in interior space and 20 litres of extra boot capacity (now 390 litres). Added to which, the BMW 2 Series Coupe also boasts more efficient aerodynamics than both the BMW 1 Series and its predecessor, as reflected in a Cd of 0.29 for the BMW 220i Coupe.

High-quality interior with driver-focused cockpit: dual-zone automatic climate control is standard; iDrive operating system is standard in the US, including a 6.5 inch Control Display in exclusive BMW flatscreen design; optional Navigation system includes an 8.8-inch screen and Touch Controller; wide variety of storage compartments, storage areas and cupholders.

Selection of optional driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive unparalleled in the sub-compact segment: High Beam Assistant, Adaptive Headlights, Parking Assistant, rear view camera, Driving Assistant, cruise control system with braking function, extended integration of smartphones and music players, Advanced Real Time Traffic Information (ARTTI) and extended functionality provided by BMW Apps for internet-based services like Facebook and Twitter.

The 228i and M235i will make their world debut at the January 2014 Detroit North American International Auto Show and arrive in US BMW centers in the first quarter of 2014. The 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe will be offered at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $33,025 for the 228i and $44,025 for the M235i, including $925 destination and handling in The United States.
